Appearance: Get a look at this stud
Age: Late 30s
Gender: Male
Personality: For the most part, Greg's a guy who likes to take things easy. So long as he's got the simple things in life, he doesn't feel a whole lot of need to strive for more. He doesn't spend a whole lot of time concerning himself with societal conventions of a high-paying job, or a big house, content with his car wash and live-in van--the same ones he's had for nigh on twenty years. When his plans to be a famous rockstar left, so did pretty much all the rest of his ambition.

He's an amiable guy, non-threatening and eager to please. Sometimes he can come across as a pushover, as he'd rather get along with people than argue, but he knows to put his foot down when it matters. Though his career in music is gone, he's still a creative mind who loves writing music, art, building things, whatever it is. He'll be the first to say he's maybe not that good at any of it, but the talent isn't what matters so much as the fun gotten from it. If you can enjoy yourself doing something, it's worth doing, so be proud and sell yourself with confidence. His glory days may have been short and not particularly glorious, but he enjoyed them, and he wouldn't be the person he was if he'd done anything differently.

Overall, Greg's a man who's happy for his life and has nowhere else he'd rather be. At the same time, however, he deals with a lot of inadequacy, as he knows he's one very small, unimpressive person in a world of much more accomplished and amazing individuals. He's come to see himself as a big of an intruder in more fantastical matters, and does his best to keep out of them entirely. A balding, overweight ex-rocker can't keep up with heroes.

For the most part, he sees these things he doesn't understand--namely, matters involving magic--as things he shouldn't get involved with for fear of making it worse. Magic makes him anxious and uncomfortable, as the guilt he carries from his wife's death links heavily to the magic world he tried and failed to be a part of. His own son's growing magical ability makes him more fearful and alienated from the magic, conflicted between staying involved in his son's life and being a supportive fole model, versus the risk of ruining things again and being responsible for losing another person because of his ignorance. In the end, he holds back as much as possible, and it's when things get dangerous that he finally steps up. He's a father, after all, and won't stand aside when there's actual risk of people getting hurt.

Years of being told to leave things to the experts has conditioned him to leave well enough alone, but what Greg really wants is to be of use to these people more impressive than him. He doesn't strive for the limelight, just an opportunity to support others and recognition for what effort he puts in.

History: Wiki here. In short: As a college dropout and wannabe rockstar, Greg met a mysterious woman named Rose Quartz. She turned out to be the leader of a group of magical alien warriors, the Crystal Gems, sworn to protect Earth from harm. Greg and Rose fell deeply in love, and after years decided to have a child together.

The issue, however, was Gems (Rose's species) don't reproduce the usual way, and in order to have a child, Rose would have to give up her life force. Regardless, she was determined to make a being of their combined species, and would gladly give anything to be part of it. So, with her death, Greg was left to raise their son Steven.

Greg loved nothing in the world more than his son, and loved taking care of him. As Steven began to grow, however, the magic of his mother's side began to develop, and Greg couldn't do much to help there. So it was time for Steven to live in with the remainder of the Crystal Gems. They, too, loved Steven dearly and wanted to take care of him well, but had grown distant and resentful of Greg for his involvement in Rose's death.

Naturally, Greg continued to be there as a father figure for Steven, but as his problems became more and more magical in nature, Greg struggled to be able to keep up, and became increasingly worried. The Crystal Gems got involved with amazing, dangerous stuff, and his very young child was right in the middle of it all. Still, as a regular shlub living in the back of his van, there was nothing he could do but be there to talk when needed.

Aspirations:
Generally, Greg's largest concern is living reasonably comfortably and with some degree of normalcy... mostly. Living in a world with magic and splendor right in front of you wears on a person's nerves in a lot of ways, both in the stress to keep out of it, and the inadequacy of being unable to help. Though Greg's largely accepted himself already to be useless, he wants to stay relevant and helpful to people in SOME way...

Fears: Between how much Greg understands about magic, and how much he doesn't know about magic, his greatest concern is losing his son and/or control of his own life to the mystical world he's tried to separate from. Magic is amazing, and powerful, and it's cost him someone very important already.

Inventory: An acoustic guitar, and several mix tapes and CDs. That's it. Everything he owns is junk.

Magic: Florakinesis

Reason: Rose puns, for one. Also, well... it's the one that, while not inherently violent, is still the most alive of the magics. Greg is used to magic being something that almost does things on its own, with practically its own will, and can end up consuming the user if they're unprepared or get in over their head. So, florakinesis' manipulation of life, and eventual returned effect on the user, will be something he'll really struggle with.

Paragraph example: Everything is going to be okay.

Greg took deep breaths, leaning back into the driver's seat and repeating the phrase over and over in his mind. Heavy metal guitars still murmured out of the speakers, too complex for him to figure out more than the volume knob in the midst of a panic attack.

Everything is going to be okay. He'd told himself this countless times before, with increasing regularity over the years. Every time Steven came back with a new story of a dangerous mission, or an ancient artifact of unknowable power, or ability that kept bringing him closer to his mother, Greg put on a smile and reminded himself that it was all right. He might not understand what was going on, or how to help, but it would work out all right. One way or another, if he didn't know what to do, someone else would.

Now, there were dangerous warriors after his family. Aliens with warships and advanced technology, easily outclassing the people he'd been counting on, stealing his son away. Rose was gone, and they were here to take away what was left.

Everything is going to be okay. The wreckage lay smoking around his van. They had been defeated, in the end. War was coming, but it wasn't here yet.

He wasn't sure how much he believed the phrase anymore. He might not have for a long time. All it did was give him a brave face for his son to see. With his breath steadying, Greg turned the key in the ignition. Everything was going to be okay, for now. That would be enough for Steven.
